OGBANJE

The belief in Ogbanje spirit children who are said to reincarnate repeatedly within the same family is deeply rooted in West African mythology, particularly among the Igbo people of Nigeria The concept is similar to the Yoruba belief in Abiku, which describes children born with a spiritual connection to the otherworld

While Ogbanje is a distinctly African spiritual concept, other cultures around the world have their own beliefs about spirit children, reincarnation, and supernatural influences on human lives. However, the specific idea of Ogbanje where a child is believed to be part of a cycle of birth and premature death does not appear to be widely recognized outside of African traditions.

In modern times, some people view Ogbanje as a spiritual phenomenon, while others interpret it through a psychological or medical lens, linking it to conditions like sickle cell disease or other genetic disorders that cause repeated infant mortality in families.

Additionally, some scholars argue that the demonization of Ogbanje children was influenced by teachings, which labeled indigenous spiritual beliefs as evil
